Biographical Sketch
The Reverend Dr. Charles E. Goodman, Jr. celebrates eighteen years as the Senior Pastor and Teacher of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church of Augusta, Georgia. Under his visionary leadership, the church has grown into “one church in multiple locations,” serving more than 15,000 partners, including the TAB Global audience through virtual and weekly in-person services. Before his tenure at Tabernacle, Dr. Goodman faithfully served as pastor of Pleasant View Missionary Baptist Church in Salem, Alabama, for three and a half years.
A scholar and lifelong learner, Dr. Goodman holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a Doctor of Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Further pursuing academic excellence, he completed a Master of Management with a concentration in Organizational Leadership at Cambridge College and participated in Yale University’s Clergy Scholars Program.
In 2020, Dr. Goodman achieved an Executive Coaching Certification in Diversity through CoachDiversity and Howard University Business School collaboration. In 2023, he successfully defended his doctoral research on The Black Church and Leadership in Times of Crisis, earning a Ph.D. in Leadership from Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. That same year, he was selected as a Preaching Exemplar in the inaugural cohort for the Compelling Preaching Initiative at Christian Theological Seminary, under the leadership of Dr. Frank Thomas. This initiative seeks to advance the sacred tradition of African American preaching through scholarship and mentorship. In the summer of 2024, Dr. Goodman was elected Assistant Secretary for the prestigious Hampton University Ministers’ and Choir Guild Conference.
He serves on numerous community boards and contributes as an adjunct professor and mentor at various institutions of higher learning. A respected thought leader, he regularly publishes content on ministry methodologies and contemporary preaching. His ministry journey has taken him beyond the pulpit; he has preached and studied in the Holy Land, deepening his connection to the Scriptures and his commitment to service.
He has authored 4 books: You Can’t Run from Purpose, Road to Recovery, The Flip Side of Favor and It’s Complicated.
A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Dr. Goodman credits his grandparents, Deacon Ernest, and Mrs. Charlotte Swann, for instilling in him a foundation of faith and service. Affectionately known as “PG” by his congregation, he is deeply respected as a servant-leader in his community.
Outside of ministry, Dr. Goodman is an avid sports enthusiast and a devoted Philadelphia Eagles fan. He is a proud member of Omega Psi Phi and Sigma Pi Phi fraternities.
